All schools are required to adhere to the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, and make reasonable adjustments to ensure Students With Disability are able to participate in education on the same basis as students without disability.
Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration of 2019 sets out goals for Australia's education system, inclusive of:
- Goal 1: The Australian education system promotes excellence and equity
Naming that schools are required to: - promote personalised learning and provide support that aim to fulfil the individual capabilities and needs of learners
- ensure that young Australians of all backgrounds are supported to achieve their full educational potential
The Declaration states that: “The beginning of school is an important time to have in place effective early intervention and support strategies to ensure each young person has the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence to thrive as they move through school."
Moreover, that… “This means tailoring to the needs of individuals across a system that prioritises equity of opportunity and that supports achievement."
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
MTSS offers a framework for educators to engage in data-based decision making related to program improvement, high-quality instruction and intervention, social and emotional learning, and positive behavioural supports necessary to ensure positive outcomes for, teachers and students.
The MTSS tiered model of instruction includes:
- a school-wide, multi-level system of instruction
- high-quality classroom instruction
- universal student screening
- evidence-based interventions provided on a sliding scale of intensity
- continuous, data-based progress monitoring.
Students are positioned at the centre of our practice, with the classroom teacher as the core professional, positioned to progress learning. A team of Wrap Around Support, supports teachers and students, in order to manage learning progress and development. The wrap around support includes school, system and externally based professionals such as: Support Teachers- Inclusive Education, Guidance Councillors, Speech Therapists, Education Officers (BCE), Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, General Practitioners and Paediatricians.
Support Teachers – Inclusive Education are the school-based case managers for students who require intensive teaching interventions and Personalised Support Plans.
